Trout Farm

All our trout are Rainbow Trout.  They are grown in what is known as a traditional Danish pond system.

Growth cycle for Salmonids including Rainbow Trout

Eyed OvaDuring the winter months the female trout ovulates producing eggs which are fertilised with sperm or milt from the male. This takes place with the help of skilled staff.
The eggs are laid out in special trays over which a constant supply of clean water flows.  After approximately 20 days the developing embryo becomes increasingly visible particularly the eyes.

AlevinAfter a further 20 days dependent on water temperature the eggs hatch and produce pink or orange alevin. The tadpole like alevin remain attached to the yolk sac of the original egg. The alevin lays on the bottom absorbing the yolk sac.  The alevin darkens in colour and gradually takes up the appearance of a fish.

Rainbow TroutAfter about a month the fish begin to swim up from the bottom and look for feed.
At this stage they are about 2 cm long and are known as fry. They are kept in fry tanks or raceways until they are 5 cms or 5 gms in size.  At this stage they are transferred to the ponds for ongrowing.
To grow a trout to 500 gms or 35 cms takes about a year.
Trout for the table may be harvested at 300 to 500 gms.  Trout destined for angling are grown on to 1000 gms with  specimens grown on to 20 lbs and beyond.

Trout are available for sale at all sizes for stocking lakes, reservoirs of a quality suitable for fishing.

Fish are usually supplied from 350 gms (10”) upwards.  The most popular sizes for fishing are 500 to 1000 gms. We do however grow some trout to 5000 gms.
There will normally be a variable cost for delivery to your water if required
